October 2013 Sea Fishing Report

Not a lot to report for October unfortunately. What should have a been a very good month thanks to the hard work put in the last few years turned out to be an almost total washout! Wind, wind and more wind made things very difficult from the boat and even worse from the shore. To give you an idea we missed out on what is by far our best time of the year for Cod and the conditions made the Bass fishing from the shore unbearable. Still we did get out once….

Towards the end of the month we got a 3 hour window in the weather so with heavy weed still present around the Bass’y parts we took the boat out for a run. It turned out pretty good with 37 Callig caught in the space of a few hours, nothing double figures but still a couple of nice ones. Not only that but we also discovered another new mark about half a mile away from one of our existing spots. We arrived in a healthy force 4 swell and our “old” mark was compromised by it’s size and speed of drift so after an hour of struggling we took the chance to look for some new features on the seabed, the Lowrance side scanning came up trumps and with a little trial and error we got into some cracking fishing over a much larger rocky outcrop. Shame it will be next Spring before this area is productive again but you can never have too many waypoints in your plotter!

To be honest there were a couple of times where the Bass fishing was possible but I’ve not been well lately and need to avoid getting cold around my guts so with temperatures crashing (didn’t winter arrive quickly this year!) I wasn’t prepared to take the risk. I’ve had an opp now so fingers crossed should be good to go should things pick up a little in November.

As far as the local rumour mill goes things have been just as quiet, it’s not just us wimping out on the weather, nobody has moved far so catch reports from others are very few and far between. The most interesting thing I did hear was reports of Bass being caught from Douglas. As opposed to the fishing on the west coast which is mainly lure fishing for them rumour has it they were falling to large worm and crab baits. I’m not sure how big a pinch of salt to take this information with so don’t blame me if you blow your Xmas budget on Peelers and catch nothing 😉
