To be honest we barely see any Cod in the Isle of Man anymore. The boat specimens tend to be the darker coloured fish found over rough ground. However last year I heard of quite a few fish turning up along the shore up north. So with Bass now being “too easy” I figure it’s time to dig out some Cod fishing tackle and have a crack for Cod from the shore.
Cod have been dwindling in numbers along our shores and the wider British Isles as they venture into deeper and colder waters, making them less accessible for fishing as they grow larger. When cod reach around 3 pounds in weight, they become viable targets for anglers, but a significant decline in their population is noticeable among larger specimens. Fishing for cod from the shore is considered one of the most challenging branches of shore angling due to the scarcity of cod in recent years. Cod are not typically found close to the shore, requiring anglers to cast with precision to reach feeding fish. Developing a basic level of casting ability and local knowledge is crucial, making cod fishing unsuitable for novice sea anglers. Therefore, beginners are advised to first focus on acquiring fundamental shore angling skills, such as obtaining appropriate tackle, learning to cast effectively, and understanding local fishing spots.

These winter-loving fish are often targeted when other species migrate to warmer waters, with cod weighing between 5-6 pounds sometimes referred to as ‘codling’. However, catching cod is not for the faint-hearted or inexperienced angler, as it requires skill in casting long distances due to their tendency to stay further from the shore. In the pursuit of catching cod, it is beneficial for individuals to join an angling club and participate in events to enhance their shore angling skills. Winter conditions can further complicate cod fishing, making it challenging to cast far enough and maintain bait position. Choosing the right venue becomes crucial, as casting skill and range are determining factors in successful fishing expeditions. Rock marks and piers are recommended options as they provide access to deep water where cod are likely to be found. For those lacking in casting abilities, taking casting lessons may prove beneficial in improving their chances of a successful catch.
For successful cod fishing, employing tactics such as night fishing, especially with an offshore wind or in murky waters, can yield better results. Fishing during spring tides, when the flood and ebb tides bring ample food supply, can also increase chances of a successful catch.
To gear up for cod fishing, a sturdy 12-15ft Beach Caster capable of casting 5-8oz weights, along with a strong shockleader line and appropriate hooks and bait, is essential. Live baits like peeler crab, ragworm, lugworm, and squid are ideal choices, but frozen alternatives can be kept as backups during seasons when live bait is scarce.
Cod fishing rigs can vary based on personal preference, with ready-made cod rigs available in a range of complexities. If you can get the distance you’ll not go wrong with a running leger setup. It’s crucial to change bait regularly, keeping it fresh to attract cod effectively. By following these guidelines and adapting tactics to suit the conditions, angling enthusiasts can increase their chances of landing these elusive and prized catches.
Overcoming the temptation to be swayed by rumours and maintaining a focus on facts and logic can lead to more favourable fishing outcomes. It is essential for anglers to remain grounded in reality and assess their capabilities accurately when faced with challenging onshore wind conditions that may affect their ability to fish effectively. Watching the sea for a few minutes before abandoning a venue can provide crucial insights into whether the conditions are suitable for fishing.
Is short, Cod can be a royal pain in the ass to catch. But the Isle of Man offers as good an opportunity to land land one from the shore as anywhere in the British Isles.
